Classification of Winds
Earth experiences various types of conditions like the breeze, air, wind, cyclones, rain and many more. These environmental conditions are felt due to changes in the condition of the earth. Various effects of temperature lead to hotness, cold and rain on the earth. The flow of gases creates heavy movement of air and leads to the formation of winds, breeze, hurricane, storm and gale.
The flow of air from higher zones creates lower zones to create pressure in air and causes winds. Winds blowing with average speed create a breeze with different variations.
The characteristics of the wind depend on features like:
- The velocity of the air
- Wind energy
- The density of the gas present
Depending on the strength and direction, the wind is classified into:
- Short bursts of high-speed winds or gusts
- Strong winds or squall
- Long-duration winds
Wind, which has a speed of 18 miles per hour and must be at least 10 miles per hour faster than the average wind speed, is termed as gust.
The wind, which increases at least 8 m/s and attains a top speed of at least 11 m/s and lasts for at least a minute, is termed as a squall. Squall has a noticeable feature like a sudden and sharp increase in the speed of the wind lasting more than a minute.
Long-duration winds are characterised by various average speeds and are classified as hurricane, gale, breeze and storm. When the land surfaces are heated, a local breeze is generated, and this breeze lasts for a few hours.
In this article, let us know more about the breeze and its types in detail.
Type of Breeze
It gives a mild, calm imagination when we hear the word “breeze”. Breeze is the type of wind that blows from high to low-pressure zones. Depending on the average speed at which the wind travels, the breeze is classified into:
Fresh breeze, Gentle breeze, Light breeze, Moderate breeze, Strong breeze, Fresh gale, Moderate gale, Whole gale, Strong gale, Storm and Hurricane. The above mentioned breeze sustains for nearly 10 minutes or more.
These breezes describe the condition of the land and sea. Breeze is classified into three types:
- Sea Breeze
- Land Breeze
- Valley Breeze
The sea breeze is the reason for the rapid warm and cool effects on the land. Colder and denser air flows from water to land. A region of low-level air convergence is produced since the sea breeze terminates over the land.
Valley breeze is produced due to the fast warming of the valley floor that leads the air to expand and flow up the slopes. Sometimes, the rising currents due to the breeze causes thunderstorms in the mountain regions. During the late-night, the land-surface radiation cools the valley slopes and hence a lighter and cooler air blows into the valley.
A land breeze is a local breeze that is characterised by the flow of breeze from land to water during the late night. The land breeze is shallower than the sea breeze.
