# Relation Between Inch And Cm

There are several measuring units like feet, inches, yards, meters and centimeters to find the length of various objects around us. But, there are times where we have different objects with different measuring units. In such cases, we need to convert the length of a given object from one unit to another....Read MoreRead Less

## Defining Inch to Centimeter Conversion

In mathematics, the conversion from inches to centimeters is often used while working with length related problems. In this article, we’re going to see how they are related to each other, and how to convert inches to centimeters and vice versa. We can actually start by defining the term inch.

## Inch

In the traditional system of measurement, an inch is a unit of length. Inches are represented by the letters ‘in’ or the symbol “, a double quote mark .

For example:

16 in or 32” are ways in which inches are represented.

An inch is equal to $$\frac{1}{36}$$ yard and $$\frac{1}{12}$$ of a foot.

Next, we will look at defining the centimeter and post that we can observe the interconversion between inches and centimeters.

## Centimeter

The centimeter is a metric unit of length measurement, and this unit of measurement is expressed as ‘cm’. A centimeter is also equal to one hundredth of a meter.

The relation between inch and cm can be understood by the statement: One inch equals 2.54 cm.

Similarly, one cm equals 0.393701 in.

1 in = 2.54 cm

1 cm = 0.3937 in

## Conversion of Inches to Centimeters

Imagine there are two different objects in which one of them is measured in inches and the other in centimeters. In order to perform various comparisons and calculations on these measurements, we have to convert the given quantity or value from either inch to centimeter or vice-versa. But how do we convert these units? This is done by simply putting the values in the formula that has been provided.

The formula to convert a given value or quantity from inches to centimeters conversion is:

Value (cm) = 2.54 $$\times$$ Value (in)

Or

Value (in) = $$\frac{\text{Value(cm)}}{2.54}$$

## Conversion Chart from Inches to Centimeters

## Solved Examples

Example 1:

Rachel has purchased a new 55-inch LED television for her new home. However, in order to fit that TV into the living room’s TV cabinet, the electrician has requested her to provide the TV’s dimensions in centimeters. Convert the TV’s size from inch to cm.

Solution:

Given the size of the TV = 55 in

The formula to convert inch to cm is:

Value (cm) = 2.54 $$\times$$ Value (in)

Now, let’s add the given value in the above formula.

We get,

Size of the TV (cm) = 2.54 $$\times$$ Size of the TV (in)

= 2.54 $$\times$$  55       Substitute the value and simplify

= 139.7

Therefore, the size of the TV is 139.7 centimeters.

Example 2:

A player’s height must be at least 60 inches in order to be selected for an upcoming sports event. Alan, who stands 160 cm tall, wants to take part in the event. Convert Alan’s height from centimeters to inches to see if he can be selected.

Solution:

Given, Alan’s height = 160 cm

To convert Alan’s height from centimeters to inches, let’s use the formula:

Value (in) = $$\frac{\text{Value(cm)}}{2.54}$$

Then,

Height (in) = $$\frac{160}{2.54}$$

= $$\frac{160\times100}{2.54\times100}$$    Remove the decimal by multiplying 100 to the numerator and denominator.

= $$\frac{16000}{254}$$         Simplify.

= 62.99

$$\approx$$ 63

As a result, Alan is 63 inches tall and is eligible for selection.
