What are Demonstrative Pronouns?

Demonstrative pronouns are pronouns that are used to denote/point towards a particular object. That object can be a person, place, animal, thing or any situation/activity. For example, “This is the site of the crime.” Here, ‘this’ points towards the site where the crime took place. There are mainly four demonstrative pronouns that are used, and learning how and when to use them will prove to be beneficial for kids.

• This – The demonstrative pronoun ‘this’ is used to point towards an object that is near to the person who is speaking about it and is singular in nature. For example, “This is the book I was talking about.” Here, ‘this’ refers to a book that’s near the person and is singular.
• These – The demonstrative pronoun ‘these’ is used to point towards an object that is near to the person who is speaking about it and is plural in nature. For example, “These flowers are brought by my mother.” Here, ‘these’ refers to the number of flowers near the person who’s talking about it.
• Those – The demonstrative pronoun ‘those’ is used to point towards an object that is far/at a distance from the person who is speaking about it and is plural in nature. For example, “Those books are his.” Here, ‘those’ is used to refer to the books that are far away from the speaker and plural in nature.
• That – The demonstrative pronoun ‘that’ is used to point towards an object that is far/at a distance from the person who is speaking about it and is singular in nature. For example, “That is a church.” Here, ‘that’ is used to point to a church that is far away from the speaker.

Difference between Demonstrative Pronoun and Demonstrative Adjectives

Students often get confused between demonstrative pronouns and demonstrative adjectives. The best and simplest way to avoid such confusion is to observe the sentence structure. Demonstrative pronouns are those pronouns that replace the noun or a noun phrase in the sentence. Whereas demonstrative adjectives modify or change a noun, and it’s followed by a noun too.
