There are 26 chest bones in the human body.
The chest or the thorax encloses respiratory and cardiovascular organs such as the lungs and heart. It also houses organs from other systems such as the digestive system ( the thymus gland and the oesophagus). In a healthy adult human, there are 26 chest bones, but some individuals have a congenital condition where they possess an extra rib (called cervical ribs).
