Water is evaporated from plants through a process called transpiration. Up to 99.5% of the water received by a plant’s roots is excess water that transpires from the plant rather than being used for development or metabolism. Transpiration is essential for maintaining moisture in the environment. Up to 10% of the moisture in the Earth’s atmosphere comes from plant water transpiration.
Functions of transpiration include the following:
- Water and minerals are transported to various areas of the plants by xylem through transpiration pull.
- It promotes cell division and preserves the turgidity of the cells.
