Difference Between Vaporization and Evaporation

Usually, many people tend to be confused about these two processes and many a times these terms are misunderstood. While they appear to be words with similar meaning, but they have differences.

Besides, when you talk about them on a molecular level, both these process differ quite marginally from each other. They both occur at different surfaces, time, and temperatures. However, one similarity they have is that during both vaporization and evaporation the molecules of liquids escape into a gaseous state. But again, when you strictly analyze these two processes you will be able to observe a lot of distinct characteristics.

They are often used interchangeably but very few actually know the exact difference between them. Vaporization of an element or compound is a phase transition from the liquid state to vapor. Vaporization is of two types namely evaporation and boiling.

Evaporation is a type of vaporization where it is defined as the process of where a liquid changes to vapor at its boiling point.

Usually vaporization can occur at any temperature.

Evaporation occurs only at the boiling point of a liquid.

Temperature of the liquid changes during vaporization.

Temperature is usually constant (=boiling point) during evaporation.

Vaporization takes place mostly at the surface of a liquid.

When evaporation happens it affects the entire mass of the liquid.

Vaporization is normally a silent and slow process.

Evaporation occurs at a fast pace and is usually a violent process.

The rate of vaporization depends on factors like speed of the wind, surface area of the liquid, the temperature and finally the humidity levels.

Evaporation is not dependent on any of those factors and occurs whenever a liquid hits it boiling mark.
