CAT 2016 – Evolution of the pattern

The task of conducting Common Aptitude Test (CAT) is conferred on one Indian Institute of Management (IIM) every year. Thence, the question paper follows a different sectional pattern every year.

The bi-sectional pattern developed in 2014, was discarded in 2015 and a new tri-sectional pattern had been implemented. But, the number of sections is not the only aspect that was changed in the new pattern. It varies regarding weightage, duration, the number of questions and the flexibility factors.

  • Quantitative Aptitude (QA): 34 Q

The Quantitative Aptitude section evaluates the analytical ability of the individual. It comprises of questions from the topics such as Algebra, Number Systems, Quadratic Equations, Permutations, modern mathematics, the knowledge of integers, geometry, arithmetic & mensuration. The difficulty level varies between medium to hard. But, with right practice, the required speed and accuracy can be achieved.

 Question Paper Analysis

Quantitative Ability was of moderate – tough difficulty level. Relatively, the non-MCQs were lesser in this section.

According to the CAT exam takers, there were wrong questions in the section. A question on Time & Distance and a question on Progressions were wrong. If the IIM recognizes these questions as an error,  hen these questions they may be ignored while marking.

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC): 34Q

As the name suggests, this section evaluates the verbal ability through questions from Reading Comprehensions, para jumbles, and grammar ability.

 Question Paper Analysis

34 questions were asked in this section. 9 questions were from Reading Comprehension with five passages, which were lengthy. The section was vocabulary intensive and was a blend of direct and inferential type. Most of the Verbal Ability questions were mostly non-MCQ or TITA type. The topics from which the questions appeared were Fill in the Blanks, Para Jumbles, Sentence Correction, Out of Context and Para Summary.

  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI/LR): 32 Q (16 Q DI and 16 Q LR)

This part assesses the information deduction skill & logical ability of the individual. Data Interpretation had questions divided into four sets. The information sets were presented in the form of various bar diagrams, data tables, pie charts, Venn diagrams and also numerous graphical representations.

The Logical Reasoning section will have questions based on statement conclusion; blood relation; arrangement. The candidates might also be tested for their abilities to draw conclusions from given premises which test the basic knowledge of formal logic.
