The full form of IES is Indian Engineering Services, and the full form of GATE is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.
Conducting Body
GATE and IES/ESE open different gateways for the candidates. While GATE is organized and managed by any one of IITs or IISc, IES/ESE is managed by the UPSC.
Purpose of the Examination
The GATE examination is mainly organized to check the core ability of the candidates in their respective disciplines for admission to a postgraduate program in engineering/technology. GATE-qualified candidates are also eligible to proceed with their careers with IITs and NITs. Also, GATE scores play an important role in PSU recruitment.
On the other hand, IES is organized for central government jobs in several departments. The exam is conducted to select applicants for engineering positions for several departments.
Examination Pattern
GATE is a single-level examination, while the IES/ESE has three different levels that cover the prelims, mains, and personality tests.

GATE includes 29 disciplines while IES/ESE includes four engineering branches:

Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
