Black soil is found in states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh.
It is largely found in the Deccan Plateau and Malwa plateau because of the;
- Moderate rainfall
- Underlying basaltic rock
According to FAO, “black soils are mineral soils which have a black surface horizon enriched with organic carbon”.
Black soils are also referred to as ‘regur’.They are-
- Resistant to water and wind erosion
- Have moisture retention capacity.
- Made of fine particles of clay texture.
- Highly fertile and rich in calcium, carbonate, potash,
- Deficient in Nitrogen and Phosphate
Black soil is favourable for the cultivation of cotton, oilseeds, tobacco, millets, etc.
The pH level of black soil ranges from 7.2 to 8.5, which is suitable for plant growth.
