There are three main types of mountains –
- Fold Mountains – formed when two plates collide head-on, and their edges crumble. The upward folds are known as anticlines, and the downward folds are synclines. Examples – Himalayan Mountains in Asia, Rockies mountains in North America
- Block Mountains – When a fault block is raised or tilted, block mountains are formed. Higher blocks are called horsts and troughs are called grabens. Example – the Sierra Nevada mountains in North America.
- Volcanic Mountains – formed due to volcanic activity. Movements of tectonic plates create volcanoes along the plate boundaries, which erupt and form mountains. Example – Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mount Kea and Mauna Loa in Hawaii.
