The headquarters of ASEAN is located in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) was established on 8th August 1967 following the Bangkok Declaration.
The motto of the organisation is “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”.
Initially, the members of ASEAN were Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
Currently, the member nations of ASEAN are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
India is not a member of ASEAN due to its geographical location.
The primary goals of the ASEAN are to nurture economic growth, social development, cultural development, and thereby creating a peaceful community of Southeast Asian Nations.
It adheres to the principles of the UN Charter for promoting regional peace and cooperation with respect for justice and rule of law.
ASEAN vision was adopted in 2020 and the ASEAN community was launched in 2015.
ASEAN Charter, a legally binding document for the member states came into force on 15 December 2008 as a legal framework that determines rules, norms, values, and targets for ASEAN.
ASEAN Plus Three Countries includes the members of ASEAN plus the People’s Republic of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.
