What causes a phytoplankton bloom?

Phytoplankton blooms happen when sunlight and additional nutrients are readily and abundantly available to the plants in the environment. These plants grow and reproduce up to a point where their presence is so dense that it changes the colour of the water they live in.

Other factors influence phytoplankton growth rates, including water temperature and salinity, water depth and the number of primary consumers present in the aquatic environment
