The neolithic period did not begin or end in tandem in the subcontinent. Instead there were three periods in the Neolithic periods in the subcontinent. The timelines are as follows:

• First Period – 7000 BC to 5500 BC
• Second Period – 5500 BC to 4500 BC
• Third Period – 4500 BC to 3500 BC
