Loktak Lake is famous for being one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. Located in the northeastern state of Manipur, it is the primary source of water for 55 villages and hamlets that surround it.
It serves as a source of water for hydropower generation, irrigation and drinking water supply. Loktak Lake was designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on 23 March 1990 due to its ecological importance
