- The Siachen Glacier is part of Ladakh, which has now been converted into a Union Territory. It is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalayan mountains. The Siachen Glacier lies to the south of the great drainage divide that separates the Eurasian Plate from the Indian subcontinent in the glaciated portion of the Karakoram. Hence, it is also called the “Third Pole”.
- It is located at a height of around 5700 m above sea level. Winds at this height can cross the 100 mph limit in no time, leading to a drop in temperature below -60 degrees. It is not just the harsh weather, but the non-availability of many basic amenities that makes life tougher up there. Staying for long in these climatic conditions might eventually lead to numerous health issues.
