Note: KVPY exam has been terminated from the year 2022. DST has decided to subsume KVPY with INSPIRE. KVPY Aptitude test will not be conducted from the year 2022 onwards. Ongoing KVPY fellows will continue to receive fellowship as per norms from DST.

Here we have listed down the official Kishore Vaigyanik Protsaha Yojana (KVPY) eligibility criteria to help students check and understand the requirements of the exam. They can go through the set conditions and further decide whether to apply for the exam or not. However, due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, few changes in the eligibility criteria have been introduced for KVPY 2021. Students can read the updated KVPY Eligibility Criteria and find out whether they are eligible to apply or not.

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsaha Yojana (KVPY) Fellowships (scholarships) are given to Indian students who wish to pursue their higher education in India. Candidates doing UG under correspondence course or distance education scheme are not eligible to apply for this examination.

The students who are willing to pursue a regular degree in basic sciences such as B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science or Environmental Science are eligible for KVPY fellowship.

Eligibility for SA stream in KVPY

In light of the present COVID-19 situation, as a one-time measure, students who have passed  X Standard Board Examination and are ready to enrol in XI standard (Science subjects) during the academic year 2021-22, are eligible to appear for the Aptitude test. Students should produce a study certificate of class XI class once they are selected as a provisional KVPY fellow.

The fellowship of the students selected under this stream will be activated only if they join for an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.) in the academic year 2023-24 after having secured a minimum of  60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the XII standard Board Examination.

During the interim period of one year, students will be invited to the National  Science (Vijyoshi) Camp and their travel expenses and local hospitality will be met by KVPY.

Eligibility for SX stream in KVPY

Students enrolled in XII Standard (Science subjects) during the academic year 2021–22 and aspiring to join undergraduate program in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S) during the academic year 2022-23.

The fellowship of the students selected under this stream will be activated only if they join for an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.) in the academic year 2022-23 after having secured a minimum of  60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination.

Alternatively, students in their 2nd year of study in Cambridge International Examination Board and aspiring to join undergraduate program in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S) during the academic year 2022-23.

The fellowship of the students selected under this stream will be activated only if they join for an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.) in the academic year 2022-23 after having secured a minimum of  60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the 2nd year of study in Cambridge International Examination Board Examination.

Eligibility for SB stream for KVPY

With the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic and situation in the country, as a one-time measure, students who have passed  XII Standard Board Examination and eligible to enrol in the 1st year B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. during the academic year 2021–22 are eligible to appear for the aptitude test. Students are required to produce a study certificate of 1st year B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S once they are selected as a provisional KVPY fellow.

Moreover, the fellowship of the students selected under this stream will be activated only if they join an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S) in the academic year 2021-22 and have secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in 1st year of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.

Empowerment Initiative in the KVPY fellowship program

Additional scholarships are given to candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD community and persons with disabilities.

  1. A certain number of additional fellowships exclusively for the students belonging to SC/ST community under the various streams as stated above will be operated.
  2. A certain number of fellowships under various streams as stated above will be operated exclusively for students under the category of Persons With Disability (Physically and Visually Challenged).

KVPY SB Fellowship Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a fellowship, students must receive a 60 percent (50 percent for SC/ST/PWD) on their first-year final test in their undergraduate degree.

KVPY 2021 Fellowship

  • The fellowship will be awarded to selected students who pass the aptitude test with the KVPY cutoff. However, such students must first enrol in a fundamental science undergraduate programme (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.).
  • Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science, or Environmental Science are among the trades eligible for the KVPY eligibility criteria 2021.

What are the minimal qualifying marks for KVPY 2021-22?

For SA/SX streams, students must have an aggregate of 75 percent (65 percent for SC/ST/PWD) in math and scientific subjects in class 10th examinations; for SB streams, the minimum marks in math and science subjects in 12th class board exams are 60 percent for General, 50 percent for SC/ST/PWD.
