Quintillion

Quintillion is the denomination used for large numbers. A quintillion is the number name for 10 raised to the power of 18, that is, one followed by 18 zeros. In the International numeral system, a quintillion has 6 groups of zeros in 3, that is, 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. The prefix “exa” is used for quantities of a quintillion.

For example,

(i) An exabyte is equal to one quintillion bytes

(ii) An exametre is equal to one quintillion metres

(iii) The whole universe is 68 quintillion times the size of Earth

What is the value of 5 million times 20 trillion?

Solution:

Now, 5 millions = 5 × 10⁶

20 trillions = 20 × 10¹²

∴ 5 million times 20 trillions = 5 × 10⁶ × 20 × 10¹²

= 100 × 10¹⁸

= 100 Quintillion

Hence, the value of 5 million times 20 trillion is 100 Quintillion.

Example 2:

Convert 32 Quintillion into billions.

Solution:

We know, 1 Quintillion = 1 Billion Billions

∴ 32 Quintillions = 32 Billion Billions.

Example 3:

If 1 terabyte is equal to 10¹² bytes, how many terabytes will be in one exabyte?

Solution:

1 exabyte = 1 quintillion bytes = 10¹⁸ bytes

1 terabyte = 10¹² bytes

∴ 1 exabyte = 1,000,000 terabytes = 1 × 10⁶ terabytes

Hence, 1 exabyte = 1 million terabytes.
