In Mathematics, roman numerals are defined as the numeral system, in which the numbers in the system are represented using the different combinations of letters. The most commonly used roman numerals from 1 to 10 are I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X. From these notations, IV represents the number 4 and IX represents the number 9. Here, IV can be read as “one less than 5” and IX can be read as “one less than 10”.
The roman numerals use the base ten system or decimal system, instead of the place value notation. The combination of different symbols will represent Arabic numeral. All the Roman numerals are the English alphabet. But, not all the English alphabets are Roman numerals. In this article, we are going to discuss “XXXIX Roman Numeral” in detail with its definition, conversion, and many examples.
Roman Numeral and its Value
There are seven different symbols that play a major role in the formation of different Roman numerals. Each symbol has its fixed integer value. The seven important symbols and their integer values are as follows:
Roman Numeral | I | V | X | L | C | D | M |
Integer Value | 1 | 5 | 10 | 50 | 100 | 500 | 1000 |
Roman Numeral | \(\begin{array}{l}\bar{V}\end{array} \) |
\(\begin{array}{l}\bar{X}\end{array} \) |
\(\begin{array}{l}\bar{L}\end{array} \) |
\(\begin{array}{l}\bar{C}\end{array} \) |
\(\begin{array}{l}\bar{D}\end{array} \) |
\(\begin{array}{l}\bar{M}\end{array} \) |
Integer Value | 5000 | 10,000 | 50,000 | 100,000 | 500,000 | 1,000,000 |
For example, the combination of two numerals X and X, i.e., XX is equal to 20. We know that “X” represents the value 10. Hence,
XX = 10 + 10 = 20
Similarly, we can create different roman numerals with the help of these seven symbols.
XXXIX Roman Numeral Value
The equivalent value of XXXIX roman numeral is “39”. This can be appended as follows:
XXXIX = XXX + IX = 30 + 9 = 39.
(As, XXX = X + X + X = 10 + 10 + 10 = 30)
Thus, XXXIX is a Roman numeral that represents the number 39.
If a number contains multiple digits, it is built by appending various roman numerals from the highest to the lowest values.
Various Roman numerals are written using the “Subtractive Notations”. To avoid clumsiness while writing the Roman numeral, we use the subtractive forms in the standard use. The combination of different Roman symbols provides significant flexibility, and some of the applications use Roman numerals. A few Roman numerals that use subtractive forms are as follows:
4 = IV
9 = IX
XL = 40
XC = 90
CD = 400
CM = 900
Some other examples of the combination of Roman numerals are:
245 = CC + XL + V = CCXLV
207 = CC + VII = CCVII
List of Roman Numerals From 1 to 50
Roman numerals are the other way to write numbers. They may look different, but they are equal. For example, XXXIX Roman numeral is equivalent to the number 39. The following table shows the list of Roman numerals for the numbers 1 to 50.
Number | Roman Numeral | Number | Roman Numeral |
1 | I | 26 | XXVI |
2 | II | 27 | XXVII |
3 | III | 28 | XXVIII |
4 | IV | 29 | XXIX |
5 | V | 30 | XXX |
6 | VI | 31 | XXXI |
7 | VII | 32 | XXXII |
8 | VIII | 33 | XXXIII |
9 | IX | 34 | XXXIV |
10 | X | 35 | XXXV |
11 | XI | 36 | XXXVI |
12 | XII | 37 | XXXVII |
13 | XIII | 38 | XXXVIII |
14 | XIV | 39 | XXXIX |
15 | XV | 40 | XL |
16 | XVI | 41 | XLI |
17 | XVII | 42 | XLII |
18 | XVIII | 43 | XLIII |
19 | XIX | 44 | XLIV |
20 | XX | 45 | XLV |
21 | XXI | 46 | XLVI |
22 | XXII | 47 | XLVII |
23 | XXIII | 48 | XLVIII |
24 | XXIV | 49 | XLIX |
25 | XXV | 50 | L |
It should be noted that the same symbol should not be repeated more than thrice in a row. For example, the number 4 is represented as IV, not IIII.

Converting Roman Numerals to Numbers
The two simple rules, which are used to convert the roman numeral to the number are:
- If a symbol appears after a larger symbol, then the values should be added. For example, XI = X + I = 10 + 1 = 11
- If a symbol appears before a larger symbol, then the values should be subtracted. For example, IX = X – I = 10 – 1 = 9
Numbers Close to XXXIX
Below are the few numbers along with their conversions which are nearer to XXXIX.
XXXV = 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 = 35
XXXVI = 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 36
XXXVII = 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 = 37
XXXVIII = 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 38
XXXIX = 10 + 10 + 10 + (10 – 1) = 39
XL = 50 – 10 = 40
XLI = 50 – 10 + 1 = 41
XLII = 50 – 10 + 1 + 1 = 42
XLIII = 50 – 40 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 43
XXXV Roman Numerals
The roman numeral XXXV is equivalent to the natural number 35. This number is 4 less than the roman numeral XXXIX and 5 more than the number 30, i.e. XXX.
XXXV = 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 = 35
Or
XXXV = 30 + 5 = 35
Converting Numbers to Roman Numerals
For converting numbers to Roman numerals, break the numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. For example, 1439 in Roman numeral is:
1439 = 1000 + 400 + 30 + 9
1000 = M
400 = CD
30 = XXX
9 = IX
Therefore, the number 1439 is equivalent to the Roman numeral:
1439 = M + CD + XXX + IX
1439 = MCDXXXIX

Solved Example
Question:
Write the value of 24 + 15 in Roman numerals.
Solution:
24 + 15 = 39 = XXXIX
Alternatively,
24 + 15 = XXIV + XV
= XX + IV + X + V
= (XX + X) + (IV + V)
= (20 + 10) + (4 + 5)
= 30 + 9
= 30 + (10 – 1)
= XXXIX
