What is the Difference between Plant Mitosis and Animal Mitosis?

Mitosis is a process where one cell divides to give rise to two identical daughter cells. The chromosomes are equally distributed in the two cells. The chromosome number remains the same as the parent cell in the daughter cells, therefore, mitosis increases the number of cells in the body, which is used for growth, repair and regeneration. After mitosis, the cells divide by a process of cytokinesis.

However, the process of division occurs differently in plants and animals. Let us take a look at differences between plant and animal mitosis.

Plant Mitosis

Animal Mitosis

Location

It occurs only in the meristematic tissues.

It occurs in all the animal parts except the reproductive cells.

Centrioles

Spindles are formed without centrioles.

Spindle formation takes place with the help of centrioles.

Cytokinesis

A cell plate is formed in the parent cell which grows to the outside until the division of the cell.

The cell is divided by pinching and forming a cleavage.

Centre of Division

The cell plate grows centrifugally, from inside to out.

The cleavage proceeds centripetally, from outside to inside.

Hormones/Factors

Plant mitosis is controlled by the hormone cytokinin.

Animal mitosis is controlled by a number of factors like, EGF, PDGF, lymphokines, etc.

FAQs

Q1

How is meiosis different in plants and animals?

Animals directly produce gametes by the process of meiosis, whereas plants produce spores by meiosis. The spores produce a gametophyte and then it divides to form gametes.

Q2

Where in a plant or animal does meiosis take place?

Meiosis takes place during sexual reproduction, therefore it happens in the male and female reproductive organs.

Q3

Where does mitosis occur in plants?

Mitosis occurs in the meristematic tissues of the plants.

Q4

How is plant mitosis different from animal mitosis?

The most important difference between plant and animal mitosis is the cytokinesis. In plants, a cell plate is formed, whereas in animals a cleavage is formed.
