The arrangement of elements in a discrete pattern based on the atomic number is known as periodic classification. Different scientists have tried to classify elements on their own. Dimitri Mendeleev stated that elements are arranged in the increasing order of their atomic masses. Moseley stated that elements are arranged in increasing order of their atomic numbers. They both classified horizontal rows of the periodic table as periods while vertical columns of the periodic table as groups.
