Difference Between Evaporation and Distillation

The main difference between evaporation and distillation is that evaporation is a process that involves a change in the state of matter while distillation is a process of separation. Both these processes are used for various purposes. While the vaporization in evaporation occurs below the boiling point, the vaporization in distillation occurs at the boiling point. In this article, let us learn more differences between distillation and evaporation.

Evaporation vs Distillation

Evaporation Distillation
The method of turning liquid into gas by adding heat to the liquid so that the molecules on the surface will quickly transform into a gas. Distillation is a method of producing liquid vapour or steam. This is done by heating the liquid to acquire gas and then, for various reasons, condensing the obtained gas into the appropriate liquid form.
A slow and gradual process Quick and rapid
Occurs at the surface Doesn’t only occur at the surface
Not a separation technique A separation technique
No formation of liquid bubbles at the boiling point Formation of liquid bubbles at the boiling point
Liquid vaporization below the boiling point Liquid vaporization at the boiling point

From the listed differences between distillation and evaporation, we can conclude that the main difference between them lies at the boiling point. Evaporation happens below a liquid’s boiling point when distillation happens right at the boiling point. Both systems are based on certain variables that may be identical, but all in all, they are very distinct.
