1. Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF)

Context -Virtual Ministerial Meeting on Economic Benefits for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF).

Details

  • Shri Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry and other IPEF partner countries participated in the virtual Ministerial Meeting on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). The minister expressed his belief that IPEF will promote inclusive development through enhancement of trade and investment in the region.
  • India can contribute towards supply chain resilience in sectors like pharmaceuticals and invited support from member countries in semiconductors, critical minerals and clean technologies.
  • India also spoke about the non-paper it submitted on ideas such as the mobilisation of financial resources for climate action at reasonable costs and the need for measures to counter terror financing.
  • India will host the next special negotiation round for Pillar 2-4 of IPEF in February, 2023.

About IPEF-

  • The IPEF was launched jointly by the US and other partner countries of the Indo-Pacific region on May 23 in Tokyo. The 14 IPEF partners represent 40 % of global GDP and 28 %of global goods and services trade.
  • The framework is structured around four pillars – trade, supply chain, clean economy and fair economy. India is part of three pillars only- supply chain, clean economy and fair economy.

2. INS Arnala

Context – INS Arnala- Indian Navy’s first ASWSWC launched.

Details

  • INS Arnala -India’s first Anti Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) built by the GRSE Ltd. ( Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers ) was launched at the Larsen and Toubro Shipyard in kattupalli, Tamil Nadu.
  • GRSE became the only defence public sector unit (DPSU) shipyard in India to be honoured with the Raksha Mantri’s Award 2022 for designing the most silent ship. This silent ship was the ASW SWC that was launched.
  • The ship has been named Arnala to signify the strategic maritime importance accorded to the island of Arnala (located about 13 Km north of Vasai, Maharashtra) by the great Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
  • This is the first of 8 ships being built by GRSE for the Indian Navy and will replace the Abhay class ASW ships of the Indian Navy. These are designed to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters and Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) including subsurface surveillance in littoral waters.
  • The ASW SWC ships have over 80% indigenous content, reinforcing India’s resolve towards the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

3. U 20 (Urban 20) under G-20 presidency of India.

Context – The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is organising the Urban 20 event under G20 presidency of India from December 1 – November 30, 2023.

Details –

  • A UNESCO World Heritage City, Ahmedabad will host the U20 cycle. Along with C40 (Climate 40) and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), two international non-governmental advocacy groups on urban issues, Ahmedabad will organise various events including City Sherpas’ inception meeting on 9-10 February 2023, thematic discussions and side events on urban development issues culminating with U20 Mayors’ Summit in July 2023.
  • The C40 group was started in 2005 by the then Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, and got its name in 2006, since it had 40 members that year.
  • The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group is a group of 97 cities around the world that represents one twelfth of the world’s population and one quarter of the global economy.
  • Ahmedabad became a member of the C40 on 30 June 2022 and has been a member of other global alliances like Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy and International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI).
  • Gujarat Chief Minister, Shri Bupendra Patel unveiled the logo, website and social media handles of Urban 20.
  • U 20, one of the Engagement Groups of G20 provides a platform for cities from G20 countries to facilitate discussions on various important issues of urban development including climate change, social inclusion, affordable housing, sustainable mobility, and financing of urban infrastructure and purpose collective solutions. Urban 20 strives to enhance the profile of cities on the global stage.
  • This city diplomacy initiative facilitates a productive dialogue between the national and local governments and helps promote the importance of urban development issues in the G20 agenda.
