Difference between Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS)

Both Secure Socket Layer SSL and TLS are the security protocols that are majorly used to bestow security, privacy, authentication and integration over the internet or web. Both protocols ensure that the communication occurring over the network is secure.

These protocols are utilised by web browsers to guard the transmission or communication between web applications and servers. The major agenda of SSL and TLS is to deliver communication privacy and data integrity.

What is SSL?

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a computer networking protocol that supplies security, authentication, privacy and integrity to internet communications. This protocol bestows high-level protection to the data transmitted between the web browser and server.

What is TLS?

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a security protocol designed to deliver data privacy and security at the transport layer, or we can say over the internet, to secure communication.

Difference between Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS)

S.NO SSL TLS
1. The full form of SSL is Secure Socket Layer. The full form of TLS is Transport Layer Security.
2. It is the 3.0 version. It is the 1.0 version.
3. It supports the Fortezza algorithm. It does not support the Fortezza algorithm.
4. SSL is complex as compared to the TLS protocol. TLS is simple as compared to the SSL protocol.
5. SSL has a low security level as compared to TLS. TLS has a high level of security as compared to the SLS.
6. Here we prefer the Message Authentication Code protocol. Here we prefer the Hashed Message Authentication Code protocol.
