How are NAAQS determined?

The National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) are determined by how much of the following pollutants are present in the air:

  • Lead 
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Ozone 
  • Nitrogen dioxide
  • Sulfur dioxide

National Ambient Air Quality Standards are limits on atmospheric concentration of six pollutants that cause smog, acid rain, and other health hazards.
