How do corals reproduce?

Almost all corals can produce both male and female reproductive cells and their reproductive methods vary based on their species. There are various methods of reproduction:

  1. Some coral species are hermaphrodites, meaning they produce both sperm and eggs at the same time
  2. Certain species are gonochoric, meaning that they produce single-sex colonies
  3. A few other species of coral reproduce by ejecting large quantities of eggs and sperm into the surrounding water
