In a feudalistic system, the monarch would grant lands to nobles. The nobles in exchange would pledge allegiance to the monarch and would raise an army to fight for the monarch as and when the need arose.
Feudalism was prevalent in Europe from the 6th to the 15th centuries until the beginning of the Renaissance.
