Aflatoxin is not harmful to humans in mild doses. Large doses of aflatoxin, however, lead to acute poisoning (aflatoxicosis) that can be life threatening, usually through damage to the liver.

At acute levels, aflatoxins can poison people or animals, killing them outright. The substance has also been linked to stunting and immune suppression in children who eat a lot of it
