  • The headquarters of the International Court of Justice is at the Peace Palace in Hague, Netherlands.
  • A principal judicial arm of the United Nations, it was formed in 1945 with an initiative for the development of methodologies for pacific settlement of disputes at the International level.
  • It succeeded the Permanent Court of International Justice (PCIJ) established by the League of Nations in 1920.
  • Article 33 of the United Nations mentions the following methods for the settlement of disputes. They are Negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, etc.
  • Article 93 of the United Nations states that all its 193 member states are under the court’s statute.
  • The composition of the International Court of Justice includes 15 judges elected for a term of 9 years by the UN General Assembly and Security Council.
  • The principal functions of the ICJ are:
  • 1.To settle legal disputes between the states in accordance with international law.

    2.To act in an advisory role by giving opinions on legal questions referred to it by UN
