Based on the type of crops produced and how the plants are used, the horticulture industry can be divided into three major areas. They are floriculture, olericulture, pomology and post-harvest technology.

- Floriculture is a branch of horticulture, which deals with the scientific study of flowering and ornamental crops
- Olericulture deals with the scientific study of vegetable crops
- Pomology deals with the scientific study of fruit crops
- Post-harvest technology deals with the principles and practices of handling, packaging and processing of harvested crops to increase their storage life and availability.
