What is Coral Reef made of?

Coral reefs are built by coral polyps as they secrete layers of calcium carbonate beneath their bodies. Stony corals are primarily responsible for laying the foundations of and building up reef structures. Though the weight of rural reefs may extend up to several tons, each stony coral has small polyps that average between one to three millimetres in diameter.
