What is the purpose of air quality monitoring?

The purpose of air quality monitoring is to assess the level of pollution in relation to air quality standards. These standards are a regulatory measure to set the target for pollution reduction and ultimately achieve clean and breathable air.

In India, air quality monitoring programmes are carried out by a collection of agencies:

  • Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)
  • State Pollution Control Board (SPCB)
  • Pollution control committees (PCCs)
  •  National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI)
