Irom Chanu Sharmila, also known as the Iron Lady of India fasted for 16 years against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958. It is the longest fast in the world and she continued it demanding the repeal of the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act or AFSPA in Manipur in northeast India.
After she began the fasting, Irom was arrested for “attempting suicide” and remained in police custody for 16 years where she continued her hunger strike. During this time, she was force-fed through a Ryles tube.
