The first Governor General of India was William Bentick.
He was also the last Governor General of Bengal.
The Governor General of India was appointed by the court of directors of the East India company.
The Regulating Act of 1833 converted the post of Governor-General of Bengal into the Governor-General of India. It was later converted into the post of Viceroy through the Government of India Act,1858.
The last Governor General of India was C. Rajagopalachari. He was the first Indian to become the Governor General of India.

- Abolition of Sati – He passed the Sati Regulation Act of 1829
- The crackdown on female infanticide and human sacrifice
- He stamped out thuggee, the gang of robbers and murderers in India.
