In contour farming, farmers plant crops across or perpendicular to slopes to follow the contours of a slope of a field. It is a sustainable practice as it reduces the impacts of floods, storms and landslides on the crops, reduces soil erosion, controls runoff water, increases moisture infiltration and retention and thus enhances soil quality and composition.
