What are Adjectives?

Before students start solving identifying adjectives worksheets, they have to understand what adjectives are and what are the different types of adjectives. In simple terms, adjectives are words that are used with a noun or noun clause to describe them. For example, “Sheldon is a smart boy.” Here, ‘smart’ is an adjective as it describes how Sheldon is as a boy.   • Qualitative/ Descriptive Adjectives – As the name suggests, the qualitative adjectives are those adjectives which describe the quality the person/thing. For instance, “Ritz is a charming fellow.” Here, ‘charming’ is a qualitative adjective.
  • Quantitative Adjectives – As the name suggests, quantitative adjectives is used to represent how much/quantities of something is meant. For instance, “Mother made some cookies.” Here, ‘some’ is adjective of quantity.
  • Numeral Adjectives – Numeral adjectives denote in what order or how many of things/person are there. For instance, “There are few mistakes in the answer.” Here, ‘few’ is the numeral adjective.
  • Proper Adjective – Proper Adjectives are those adjectives that are derived from the proper nouns used to describe a noun. For instance, “The Elizabethan age was one of the glorious periods in history.” Here, ‘Elizabethan’ is an example of a proper adjective.
  • Distributive Adjectives – This type of adjectives denote/refer to members of a class/group individually. For instance, “Every member got the hampers.” Here, ‘every’ is the distributive adjective.
  • Possessive Adjectives – This adjective represents possession or emphasize possession. For instance, “It is my bag.” Here, ‘my’ is a possessive adjective.
  • Demonstrative Adjectives – Demonstrative adjectives denote/point towards which person/thing is meant. For instance, “These mangoes are sweet.” Here, ‘these’ is a demonstrative adjective.
  • Interrogative Adjectives – If the adjectives use words like ‘what’, ‘which’ and ‘whose’ to interrogate/ask questions to the noun, it’s known as interrogative adjectives. For example, “What colour do you like?” Here, ‘what’ is an example of interrogative adjectives.
