What are Interrogative Adverbs?

The word ‘interrogate’ means to ask; similarly, interrogative adverbs are those adverbs that not only modify a word but also ask a question. For example, “Why are you late for office?” Here, ‘why’ is the interrogative adverb. There are six different subcategories into which interrogative adverbs can be divided. Types of Interrogative Adverbs

There are six different subcategories into which interrogative adverbs can be classified, and knowing them will help students to identify the different types of interrogative adverbs.

• Interrogative Adverb of Place – The interrogative adverb ‘where’ is used to question about a place. For example, “Where is your mother?” Here, ‘where’ is the interrogative adverb that asks about the place where the subject’s mother is.
• Interrogative Adverb of Time – Interrogative adverbs like ‘when, how long, how soon, how early’ are used to question about the time. For example, “When will Shila arrive?” Here, ‘when’ is used to question about the time the subject will come.
• Interrogative Adverb of Reason – Interrogative adverb ‘why’ is used to question the reason behind any action. For example, “Why is the baby crying?” Here, ‘why’ is used to ask the reason behind the baby’s cry.
• Interrogative Adverb of Manner – This interrogative adverb ‘how’ is used to query about the manner. For example, “How did Rachel solve the problem?” Here, ‘how’ is used to question the manner in which Rachel solved the problem.
• Interrogative Adverb of Degree – Interrogative adverb ‘how’ is used to question about the degree/intensity. For example, “How much do I have to pay?”
• Interrogative Adverb of Number – Interrogative adverb ‘how’ is used to question about the number. For example, “How many students are there in the class?” Here, ‘how’ is used to ask a question about the number of students.
