Order of operations is an important part of the Mathematics curriculum. Though this chapter is needed to solve expressions in higher classes, it proves beneficial if kids are introduced to this chapter at a young age. If kids have an idea about the order of operations, they can easily solve an expression involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

What is Order of Operations?
Order of operations is a rule that is followed while solving any expression that involves addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and other operations. There are two ways in which the order of operations can be done while solving an expression. PEMDAS or BODMAS – either of these is used depending upon the type of operation one has to perform.
- PEMDAS – This is the abbreviation for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction. The sequence of operations is followed from left to right in case of any expression. This order of operations is mainly followed for expressions that have exponent operations.
- BODMAS -This is the most common order of operations used by school students. BODMAS stands for Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction. This operation, too, is followed from left to right.
One can easily practise these from the order of operations worksheets available at our BYJU’S website.
How to Perform Order of Operations?
For those who are learning this order of operation for the first time, it might seem to be a bit difficult at first. But performing these operations is quite easy; one can easily follow the following steps to get the solution of any expression right.
- Step 1 – The basic and most important rule of this operation is it goes from left to right. So, start by finding the Parentheses/ Brackets in the given expression. Solve whatever is in the Parentheses/Brackets and then move on to the next operation. In Parentheses/Brackets ( ) is known as the first bracket, { } is the second or curly bracket, and [ ] is the third or box bracket. So one has to start by solving the operation in the first bracket followed by the second bracket and then the third bracket, if any. It’s also important to remember that one has to follow the order of operations inside the brackets too.
- Step 2 – Once the brackets/parentheses are solved, find the expression in exponents or order form and then solve them.
- Step 3 – Now, all one needs to do is find and solve the numbers that have multiplication/division operations between them (whichever comes first as per PEMDAS/BODMAS) from left to right.
- Step 4 – The last operation would be finding and solving the addition/subtraction (whichever comes first as per PEMDAS/BODMAS) from left to right.

Frequently Asked Questions on Order of Operations Worksheets
What is the order of operations?
Order of operations is a rule that is followed to solve expression that involves the major operations, i.e. Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction and Brackets/ Parentheses.
Can I solve the expression as it’s given?
No, if you want to get the right answer, you have to solve the given expression as per the order of operations from left to right. You can easily download order of operations worksheet pdfs from our BYJU’S website and give it to your children to solve as it will help them understand the concept better.
