Botanical Name: Withania somnifera

Ashwagandha is known by many other names such as Clustered Winter Cherry, Indian Ginseng, Strychnos, Winter cherry, Peyette, Asgandha, poison gooseberry etc.

It is an angiosperm and belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Traditionally, this plant, especially the root, has been used in Ayurvedic medicine since ancient times. However, there is no circumstantial evidence to prove its medicinal benefits.

In India, Ashwagandha is cultivated in dry regions. The plant prefers stony, dry soil with partial shade. It can either be cultivated from the greenwood cuttings or from seeds.
