A complete protein, also known as whole protein, is a form of protein that adequately combines all the nine essential amino acids found in the human diet.
There are 20 amino acids in a protein, and the human body can produce 11 of them. The remaining nine amino acids, referred to as “essential amino acids,” are required for optimal health and must be obtained from food. A “complete protein” is a food that includes all nine of these essential amino acids.
Fish, eggs, poultry, dairy products, pork or beef, and soy products like tofu and edamame are ideal sources of complete proteins. A few plant-based foods, such as buckwheat, quinoa, hempseed, soybeans, and blue-green algae, are complete protein sources.
