The UPSC Civil services examination result in 2008 was a memorable one for Andhra Pradesh. Dr. Adapa Karthik bagged the glorious first rank. A doctor by career, Karthik gave up scholarships for Harvard and Cambridge to join the Indian Administrative Services. Thinking beyond marks, appreciating the value of each subject and teaching these very subjects to students during his preparation helped him ace the exam.
Dr. Adapa Karthik liked being a doctor and in fact, continued to be a doctor even after becoming IAS. In his capacity as a bureaucrat, he planned health camps, where he also assisted as a doctor. But what he understood that as a doctor, the canvas you get to paint on is very small. Health is the only arena where he can work in as a doctor. This thought has changed him to become an IAS officer.
Adapa Karthik got a scholarship for his Post Graduation at both Cambridge and Harvard. He also got a scholarship from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine at Harvard. He also got Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Trust Commonwealth Shared Scholarship for his Ph.D. in Cambridge. But he gave up esteemed Harvard and Cambridge University scholarships to join the Indian administrative services. According to him it is a tremendous opportunity for leadership and to work at the grass-root level.
Dr. Adapa Karthik had been selected for the Indian Police Service in 2005 and 2007. Though, in his third attempt, his willpower to become an IAS officer made him the All India Rank topper in UPSC Civil services IAS Exam 2008. Karthik dedicated 6-8 hours a day. He stressed no in the number of hours but the quality and constancy of his studies. He was very consistent with his reading. Zoology and Psychology were his optional subject for UPSC Civil Services IAS Mains exam. He fetched total marks of 1458 in 2300. He scored 63.3% marks in UPSC IAS Exam.
