Context – The Union Ministry of Education released data from the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), 2020-21.

Details

  • The Education Ministry has been conducting AISHE since 2011, covering all higher educational institutions in India and imparting higher education in the country. In AISHE, 2020-21 higher educational institutions have filled data using entirely online Web Data Collection Format (DCF) developed by National Informatics Centre (NIC).
  • The data released showed a 7.5% increase in student enrolments across the country compared to 2019-20 with total students enrolments reaching 4.14 crore. Government Universities and Colleges (59% & 21.4% of the total) contribute towards 73.1% and 34.5% of this enrollment respectively.
  • Female Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) has overtaken male GER as the Gender Parity Index (GPI), the ratio of female GER to male GER, has increased from 1 in 2017-18 to 1.05 in 2020-21.
  • The percentage of female enrolment to total enrolment has increased from 45% in 2014-15 to around 49% in 2020-21.
  • The results of the survey show that female enrolment in North East States was 6.14 lakh in 2020-21, higher than the male enrolment of 5.92 lakh. This means that for every 100 male students, there are 104 female students in the NorthEast Region. This trend has been continuing in the North East since 2018-19 when the female enrolment outnumbered male enrolment for the first time.
  • The enrollment in Distance Education is 45.71 Lakh (with 20.9 Lakh Female), an increase of around 7% since 2019-20 and 20% since 2014-15.
  • There has been notable increase in the enrolment of ST, SC and OBC candidates.
  • While Uttar Pradesh; Maharashtra; Tamil Nadu; Madhya Pradesh; Karnataka and Rajasthan are the top 6 States in terms of number of students enrolled, Uttar Pradesh; Maharashtra; Karnataka; Rajasthan; Tamil Nadu; Madhya Pradesh; Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat are the top 8 States in terms of number of colleges.
  • Top 8 Districts with Highest number of Colleges: Bangalore Urban (1058), Jaipur (671), Hyderabad (488), Pune (466), Prayagraj (374), Rangareddy (345), Bhopal (327) and Nagpur (318).

2. G20 – International Financial Architecture Working Group

Prelims – G20: International Financial Architecture Working Group.

Context– The first International Financial Architecture Working Group meeting of G-20 under the chairmanship of India will be held in Chandigarh on 30-31 January 2023. 

Details

  • The International Financial Architecture Working Group is one of the important work streams under the G20 Finance Track with a focus on strengthening international financial architecture. It also aims to address multiple challenges faced by vulnerable countries. Approximately 100 delegates from across the G20 Membership, Invitee countries and International Organizations will be arriving in Chandigarh to participate in the two-day meeting (January 30 – 31).
  • The discussions during the two-day meeting will be jointly steered by the Ministry of Finance and the Reserve Bank of India along with France and Korea who are the Co-chairs of the International Financial Architecture Working Group.
  • Discussions will be held to devise ways to enhance stability and cohesion of the International Financial Architecture.
  • On the sidelines of the International Financial Architecture Working Group, a G20 event titled ‘Central Bank Digital Currencies: Opportunities and Challenges’ will also be held.
