Prelims: Heat Wave

 

Context : Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a meeting at his residence to assess the ongoing heat wave and readiness for the upcoming monsoon.

 

Heat Wave Situation:

 

• The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts indicate the continuation of a heat wave in regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
• The heat wave poses potential challenges to public health and safety.

 

Monsoon Preparedness:

 

• IMD predicts a normal to above-normal monsoon in most parts of the country, with below-normal rainfall expected in certain regions of Peninsular India.
• Proper preparedness for the monsoon season is crucial to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of citizens.

 

Instructions and Measures:

 

• Prime Minister Modi emphasized the necessity of conducting regular drills to prevent and manage incidents of fire.
• He stressed the importance of conducting fire audits and electrical safety audits in hospitals and other public establishments on a routine basis.
• Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of conducting regular maintenance drills for forest fire-lines and ensuring the efficient utilization of biomass resources.
• The “van agni” portal was discussed as a useful tool for the timely detection and management of forest fires.
