1. Defence Sector ICT Conclave inaugurated

Syllabus: GS-3, Economy

Mains: Telecom sector in India; ICT in defence

Context:

The Defence Sector ICT Conclave was organised by the Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications, the Ministry of Communications, and the Ministry of External Affairs.

Background:

  • The Indian telecom sector has witnessed significant progress in the recent years. 
  • There are several Indian companies which have been designing, manufacturing and exporting telecom equipment. 
  • Telecom equipment designed and manufactured in India is now being exported to nearly 70 countries.

Significance of ICT in defence:

  • From facilitating real-time coordination to enabling advanced data analysis and decision-making, ICT forms the backbone of defence operations in the 21st century. 

India’s position as an exporter of defence telecom products:

  • India’s exports have surged by 35% and India is competing on equal terms in quality with the best manufacturers in the world. 
  • At home, India has installed around 4,42,000 5G base stations and nearly 80% of the equipment used in the 5G rollout in India was manufactured indigenously.
  • It was discussed in the meeting that the potential of Indian telecom products to transform the defence sector of any country is immense.  
  • By harnessing cost-effectiveness, India’s trusted telecom products and expertise, a resilient communication infrastructure can be built that empowers defence forces to safeguard national interests more effectively.
  • Furthermore, India’s prowess in cyber security is crucial in an area where cyber-attacks pose a significant risk to national security. 
  • India’s expertise in data analytics and artificial intelligence empowers our defence forces with predictive insights and actionable intelligence, enhancing decision-making and operational effectiveness on the front.

Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC):

  • Under the ambit of the Foreign Trade Policy, TEPC was established by the Government of India in 2009 to promote and develop the export of telecom equipment and services.
  • The council’s scope encompasses the entire telecom ecosystem including ICT hardware and software, Infrastructure products, service provision, system Integration & consultancy services.

 


2. Exercise Cyber Suraksha 2024

Syllabus: GS-3, Security & Defence

Prelims: Exercise Cyber Suraksha

Context:

Ex Cyber Suraksha is being conducted.

About Ex Cyber Suraksha:

  • Exercise Cyber Suraksha is a comprehensive cyber defence exercise conducted by the Defence Cyber Agency from 20 – 24 May 2024.
  • Objective: It aims to further develop the Cyber Defence Capability of all cybersecurity organisations and promote synergy amongst all stakeholders. 
  • The exercise focuses on enhancing collaboration and integration among participants from various military and prominent national organizations.
  • Exercise Cyber Suraksha 2024 aims to empower participants by enhancing their cyber defence skills, techniques and capabilities; share best practices, and work towards a unified and robust cyber defence posture. 
  • It will promote jointmanship and synergy in the planning and preparation of a Cyber Defence Framework.

3. Prelims Facts

Central Electricity Regulatory Commission

  • The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) was established by the Government of India under the provisions of the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998. 
  • CERC is the Central Commission for the purposes of the Electricity Act, 2003 which has repealed the ERC Act, 1998. 
  • The Commission consists of a Chairperson and three other Members. Additionally, the Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority is the ex-officio Member of the Commission.
  • Major Functions of the CERC:
    • To regulate the tariff of generating companies owned or controlled by the Central Government
    • To regulate the tariff of other generating companies having a composite scheme for the generation and sale of electricity in more than one State
    • To regulate the inter-state transmission of electricity and to determine tariffs for inter-state transmission of electricity
    • To issue licenses for inter-state transmission and trading
    • To adjudicate disputes
    • To advise the Central Government on the formulation of the National Electricity Policy and Tariff Policy
    • To promote competition, efficiency and economy in activities of the electricity industry
    • To promote investment in the electricity industry
