1. 90th Interpol General Assembly, 2022

About Interpol

  • The International Criminal Police Organisation, commonly known as Interpol is the world’s largest international police organisation headquartered in Lyon, France with 195 member countries. 
  • The organisation has four administrative departments: General Assembly, General Secretariat, Executive Committee and National Central Bureaus.
  • The General Assembly is Interpol’s supreme governing body and comprises delegations appointed by the governments of its member countries. It meets once a year and takes all the major decisions affecting general policy, the resources needed for international cooperation, working methods and programmes of activities. These decisions are in the form of resolutions.
  • Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the president of Interpol. He was elected at the 89th General Assembly of Interpol in Turkey, Istanbul in 2021.
  • INTERPOL is celebrating 100 years of its inception in 2023 since the founding of the International Criminal Police Commission (1923), which then became INTERPOL in 1956.

Details

  • The 90th General Assembly of Interpol is being hosted by India. The General Assembly meeting is taking place in India after a gap of 25 years, last held in 1997.
  • Addressing the 90th Interpol General Assembly, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said that there can be no safe haven for the corrupt, drug cartels, terrorists, poaching gangs or organised crime. Police and law enforcement agencies need to devise policies and protocols to increase cooperation. Interpol can help by speeding up Red Corner Notices for fugitive offenders. 

2. DefExpo 2022

Prelims – DefExpo 2022, India – Africa Defence Dialogue (IADD)

Context – Inauguration of DefExpo, 2022 – India’s flagship Defence Exhibition.

Details

  • PM Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the 12th edition of DefExpo, 2022 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • DefExpo is organised by India’s Defence Exhibition Organisation established in 1981.
  • The theme of DefExpo, 2022 is “Path to Pride”.
  • DefExpo 2022 is the first-ever edition exclusively for Indian companies. The DefExpo 2022 also marks the celebration of one year of the formation of the seven new defence companies, carved out of the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board. All these companies will participate in DefExpo for the first time.
  • Seventy-five countries will be participating in DefExpo 2022. 
  • All three legs of India’s defence forces – Army, Navy and Airforce are participating in showcasing security systems.

India – Africa Defence Dialogue (IADD)

  • The India-Africa Defence Dialogue was held on the sidelines of DefExpo, 2022 in Gandhinagar and successfully brought out various aspects of its theme “Adopting Strategy for Synergising and Strengthening defence and Security Operations”.
  • Delivering the keynote address, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh defined the theme of IADD as the underlying commitment of India and African countries to explore new areas of convergence for defence engagements, including capacity-building, training, cyber security, maritime security and counter-terrorism.
  • The minister said that India remains united with African countries in their quest for peace, stability, growth and prosperity. The partnership of India with Africa is based on the ten guiding principles laid down by Shri Narendra Modi during his address to the Parliament of Uganda in 2018. The GoI is committed to intensifying and deepening relations with Africa.
  • The Gandhinagar Declaration was adopted as an outcome document of IADD 2022 that proposes to enhance cooperation in the field of training in all areas of mutual interest by increasing training slots and deputation of training teams, empowerment and capability building of the defence forces of Africa, participation in exercises, and humanitarian assistance during natural disasters.
  • Fifty African countries participated in the dialogue.

3. Asia’s Largest Compressed Biogas (CBG) Plant

Prelims – CBG Plant, SATAT scheme

Context – Inauguration of Asia’s Largest Compressed Biogas Plant in Sangrur, Punjab.

Details

  • Shri Hardeep S. Puri, the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural gas inaugurated Asia’s largest CBG plant in Sangrur, Punjab.
  • The plant has been commissioned with an FDI of approx. Rs 220 cr by Verbi AG, one of the leading bio-energy companies in Germany.
  • It is a step towards achieving – Sustainable Alternative towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme.
    • The SATAT  scheme was launched by GoI in 2018 to develop an ecosystem for the production of CBG from waste/biomass sources in the country.
    • Under this scheme, 38 CBG plants have been established.
  • The Sangrur plant will also reduce stubble burning thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions. It will also contribute towards India’s COP26 Climate Change targets of total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes from now to 2030 & achieving the target of net zero emissions by 2070.
