Difference Between GPS and GPRS

GPS Vs. GPRS: Know the Difference Between GPS and GPRS

Both of these are systems used in electronic devices, but there is a fundamental difference between GPS and GPRS. In this article, we will discuss the same in a tabular form. But let us first know a bit more about each of these in detail.

What is GPS?

The term GPS is an acronym, and its full form is Global Positioning System. We can use GPS for satellite-based mapping, navigation systems, GIS, etc., for any device that turns on its GPS. It does not work for the device with a turned-off GPS.

What is GPRS?

The term GPRS is an acronym, and its full form is General Packet Radio Service. We generally make use of GPRS to grant primarily cellular-based services (information services) like multimedia messaging, email messaging, video calling, etc.

Difference Between GPS and GPRS

Here are the differences present between GPS and GPRS:

Parameters GPS GPRS
Full-Form The term GPS is an acronym, and its full form is Global Positioning System. The term GPRS is an acronym, and its full form is General Packet Radio Service.
Cost Efficiency GPS is comparatively less cost-effective. It is much costlier as compared to GPRS. GPRS is comparatively more cost-effective. It is much cheaper as compared to GPS.
Total Number of Stations We require at least three or more than three stations in a GPS system. We require only one station in a GPRS system.
Primary Objective The primary objective of GPS is to allow any given civil and military user to determine geographical location. The primary objective of GPRS is to facilitate/ grant an interconnection between various packet-switched networks like a mobile phone in the form of voice and data.
Location of Usage We can make use of GPS at almost any given location. We can also make use of GPRS anywhere, but we generally use it in a limited range, such as the land.
Mode of Publicizing We can publicize the GPS using various satellites. We can publicize the GPRS using the terrestrial tower near the concerned device where we are using the GPRS.
Technologies Used The GPS system can easily work with various technologies, like WiMAX, LTE, GSM, and many more. The GPRS system acts as a very integrated part of the GSM network switching.
Usage and Applications We can use and apply the GPS system in mapping, surveying, exploration, etc. We can use and apply the GPRS system for accessing the available emails, video calls, multimedia messages, etc.
