Difference Between TDM and FDM

Both of these are basically two multiplexing techniques. There is a significant difference between FDM and TDM. For different signals, FDM shares its frequency signals- while in the case of TDM, it happens to share the timescale. Now before we get into what both of these are, let us understand more about multiplexing.

The term Multiplexing refers to the technique through which we can concurrently transmit several signals over a single link of data. A multiplexed system works with about n number of devices sharing the overall capacity of a single link. It is how a path (link) is capable of having multiple channels.

The various devices feed their streams of transmission to a MUX (Multiplexer) that merges all of them into one stream. The stream (single) received at the end of the receiver gets directed to the DEMUX (Demultiplexer). The DEMUX again translates this stream into the component transmissions and sends them to their respective receivers.

What is TDM?

The term TDM is an acronym for Time Division Multiplexing. It is a type of multiplexing technique. It deals with digital signals (which are like analog signals). The synchronization pulse is very crucial in TDM. For all the signals TDM works with, it shares the timescale for them. There are mainly two types of TDM:

  • Asynchronous TDM
  • Synchronous TDM

What is FDM?

The term FDM is an abbreviation for Frequency Division Multiplexing. It is a type of multiplexing technique that one can use in various analog systems. We require a guard band in the case of FDM. Its spectral efficiency is also pretty low. The bandwidth (B) in an FDM gets committed to various sources.

Basic For all the signals it deals with, it shares the overall timescale. It means that it shares the time for available signals. For all the signals it works with, it shares the overall frequency. It means that it shares the frequency for the available signals.
Types of Signals It works with both- digital as well as analog signals. It only deals with analog signals.
Circuitry It consists of a very simple type of circuitry. The circuitry, in this case, is comparatively more complex.
Wiring Used The Chip or Wiring of TDM is comparatively much simpler. FDM has a comparatively much more complex Chip or Wiring.
Conflict This technique has very low conflict. This technique has a comparatively higher conflict.
Input Required The synchronization pulse is a prerequisite in the case of the TDM technique. The guard band is a prerequisite in the case of the FDM technique.
Interference The TDM technique has a very low or negligible interference. The FDM technique has a very high level of interference.
Efficiency This technique is way more efficient than FDM. This technique is quite inefficient as compared to TDM.
