Both of these are iterations of USB. There are various ways in which both of these differ from each other. In this article, we will look into the difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. Before we do that, let us know a bit more about USB.
USB is an acronym for Universal Serial Bus. It enables various devices to communicate with host controllers, like computer systems. A USB connects various peripheral devices, like keyboards, digital cameras, mouse, media devices, printers, scanners, external hard drives, and flash drives. There are a variety of ways in which you can use a USB- including electrical power support. It is how USB is slowly replacing various interfaces, such as the serial and parallel ports.
USB ports are of various types, and we use them for connecting the computer to various peripheral devices. Here are a few of them:
- USB 1.x – It is a bus standard of an external type that can easily transfer data at a speed of about 12 Mbps (Megabytes second). It provides support for about 127 (maximum) peripheral devices.
- USB 2.0 – This iteration is also called hi-speed USB, and it came into the market in the year 2000. It comes with a better speed and improved functionalities than the USB 1.1 because it is an updated version. The USB 2.0 can easily deliver a transfer speed of about 480 Mbps (maximum). But practically, it can go up to 280 Mbps in general.
- USB 3.0 – This USB iteration is also called the SuperSpeed USB, and it came into the market first in November 2009. The USB 3.0 is an improvised version of the USB 2.0. The data transfer rate that it offers is pretty high- of about 5 Gbps (Gigabytes per second). The speed is, thus, much more as compared to that of the previous iterations.
- USB 3.1 – This iteration is also called the SuperSpeed+, and it came into the market in 2013. The USB 3.0 is essentially the newest and most updated version of USB. This protocol is about twice as faster as the USB 3.0, and it can easily offer a data transfer rate of about 10 Gbps.
