The Indian Air Force is yet to release the annual notification for its X & Y Group exam. The notification contains details about the application, eligibility, salary and other benefits, etc.

This article in particular will talk about the Indian Air Force Group X & Y Eligibility. Do note that the information on eligibility is based on the Indian Air Force Group X & Y notification released in 2021.

What is Group X & Y in the Indian Air Force?

Indian Air Force Group X & Y is the personnel below officer rank in the Indian Air Force also known as Airmen.  Airmen are technical or non-technical personnel serving in the Air Force but are not part of the flying clan. They are responsible for ground operations involving mechanical, electrical, electronic, IT, accounting, medical, security, Air Force traffic control, logistics, recruitment work and associated duties.

Eligibility Criteria for Indian Air Force Group X & Y

The eligibility conditions for Indian Air  Force Group X & Y are as follows:

Age Limit Candidates born between 16 January 2001 and 29 December 2004 (both days inclusive) are eligible to apply.

*Note: In case, a candidate clears all the stages of the Selection Procedure, then the upper age limit as on date of enrolment is 21 years

Educational Qualification For Group X (Education Trade Instructor not included)

Passed Intermediate/10+2/ Equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics and English from an Education Board listed as COBSE member with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English.

OR

Passed Three years Diploma Course in Engineering in any stream, as mentioned on the  CASB web portal www.airmenselection.cdac.in.

The candidate should have completed the course from a Government recognized Polytechnic institute with 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English in diploma course (or in Intermediate/Matriculation, if

English is not a subject in the Diploma Course).

For Group Y (Except IAF(S) and Musician Trades)

Passed Intermediate / 10+2 / Equivalent Examination in any stream/subjects approved by Central / State Education Boards listed as COBSE member with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English.

OR

Passed two years vocational course from Education Boards listed as COBSE member with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English in vocational

course or in Intermediate/Matriculation if English is not a subject in a Vocational Course.

For Group Y (Assistant Trade Only)

Passed 10+2/Intermediate/ equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English from an Education Board listed as COBSE member with minimum 50% marks in

aggregate and 50% marks in English

Medical Standards (i) Height: Minimum acceptable height is 152.5 cms except IAF (P) and Auto Tech trades. However, Minimum acceptable height for IAF (P) and Auto Tech trades are mentioned below:- For IAF(P) trade – 165 Cms (For NE and Hill States) 175 Cms (For other States) For Auto Tech trade -162.5 Cms (For NE and Hill States) 165 Cms (For other States)

  • Note: Candidates from NE and Hill states include Gorkhas, Kumaonis, Garhwalis, Assamese and those belonging to the states of Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Sikkim and hilly areas of Uttaranchal.

(ii) Chest: Minimum range of expansion: 5 cm

(iii) Weight: Proportionate to height and age. However, a minimum weight of 55 Kg required for Operations Assistant (ATS) Trade only.

(iv) Corneal Surgery (PRK/LASIK) is not acceptable.

(v) Hearing: Candidate should have normal hearing i.e. able to hear forced

whisper from a distance of 6 meters with each ear separately. (vi) Dental: Should have healthy gums, a good set of teeth and minimum 14 dental points.

(vii) General Health: Candidate should be of normal anatomy without loss of any appendages. He should be free from any active or latent, acute or chronic, medical or surgical disability or infection and skin ailments. Candidates shall be physically and mentally FIT to perform duty in any part of the world, in any climate and terrain.

*Notes: 

  • Candidates eligible for Group ‘X’ examination (on the basis of intermediate/10+2) are also eligible for Group ‘Y’ and would be given an option of appearing in both Group ‘X’ and Group ‘Y’ exam in one sitting while filling up the online registration form.
  •  Diploma holders are eligible to appear for Group X trades only.

What is the age limit for the Air Force XY group?

Only the candidates born between 16 January 2001 and 29 December 2004 (both days inclusive) are eligible to apply for Indian Air Force Group X Y 2022 recruitment. In some cases, where a candidate clears all the selection stages, the upper age limit as of the date of enrolment is 23 years.

Are candidates appearing for their 12th Std exams able to apply for Indian Air Force Group X & Y?

Yes, 12th appearing students are eligible to apply for Air Force Group X & Y Recruitment 2022. However, students must study Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics & English in their Higher Secondary Exam and must obtain more than 50% marks in every subject to apply for IAF Group X and Y freely.

Who can apply for Air Force Group X and Y exam 2022?

The candidates who passed 10+2 in Physics, Mathematics, and English with 50% marks are eligible to apply for Group X while the candidates who passed 10+2 in any subject with 59% marks can apply for Group Y.

What are the mandatory subjects for the Indian Air Force?

Maths and Physics are compulsory subjects required to join the Indian Air Force in their 12th. Once the candidate is shortlisted for Indian Air Force after NDA initial exam selection procedure, they will go through a rigid 3-year training at the National Defence Academy.
