  • The Non-Cooperation movement started in the year 1920.
  • Non-violent in nature and peaceful in form, Mahatma Gandhi organised the Non – Cooperation movement with the Indian National Congress.
  • It was organized immediately after the Rowlatt Act of 1919 and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Disagreement towards Montagu-Chelmsford reforms was another important reason.
  • Gandhiji advised Indians to protest in an organised manner through:
    1. Withdrawal of labour
    2. Boycotting British goods and promoting Swadeshi goods
    1. Promoting ‘self-reliance’ through the spinning of Khadi and adopting Swadeshi habits.
    2. Surrender of British titles and honours, the boycott of legislative council and law courts..
    • C. Rajagopalachari, Motilal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, and Chitranjan Das were the important personalities who were a part of the movement.
    • Though non-violent in nature, the movement was called off by Mahatma Gandhi following the Chauri-Chaura incident in 1922.
