After independence, there has been a growing demand for a reorganisation of the States on a more rational basis, in the context of not only from financial, economic and administrative management of independent India but also due to the growing importance of regional languages.
In December 1953, the States Reorganisation Commission was set up and it recommended the creation of linguistic States, at least for the major linguistic groups. In 1956, the reorganisation of some States took place on the basis of SRC reports.
